Space Fact of the Week
Asteroid Bennu Spins Faster
Ground-based observations from 1999 to 2005 have captured a rare phenomenon on Bennu - the asteroid's rotation speed is increasing by about 1 second per century! It is possible that material on the surface could be moving or leaving completely. Another explanation could be that due to its odd shape, the sunlight can bounce off the asteroid and alter the speed.
NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission will continue to collect data from Bennu so that scientists can learn more about the mystery of this occurrence, and what to expect in the future. Click the link below to learn more!
